Dr. Ronen Steinberg

The Terror of the French Revolution is one of the most famous events in modern history, yet we know relatively little about how those who lived through it struggled to understand its effect on themselves, and more generally, on French society.

In this talk, Dr. Ronen Steinberg, an associate professor in the Department of History, will present his new book, The Afterlives of the Terror: Facing the Legacies of Mass Violence in Post-Revolutionary France (Cornell University Press, 2019). The talk will focus on how the mass atrocities of the twentieth century, and especially the holocaust, have shaped the questions this book raises about the French Revolution, and maybe also, some of the answers it provides.
